The Associated Press: Court limits 30-year term for machine gun use

The Associated Press: Court limits 30-year term for machine gun use: "Supreme Court has ruled that a minimum 30-year prison term for crimes involving a machine gun may not be imposed unless a jury specifically convicts a defendant of using a machine gun.
The court on Monday unanimously upheld a federal appeals court ruling that had been challenged by the government. The decision came in the case of Martin O'Brien and Arthur Burgess, who were charged in connection with a failed robbery of an armored car carrying $2 million in the Boston area in 2005.
O'Brien and Burgess were indicted on several counts, including carrying a machine gun in the commission of a crime. Federal prosecutors dismissed the machine gun count because they believed they could not prove it to a jury beyond a reasonable doubt."

Bing bans TV crews from cop raids | detnews.com | The Detroit News: "Cameras from the true-crime television show 'The First 48' were rolling the morning of May 16, when the police department's Special Response Team, looking for a murder suspect, executed a raid on an eastside flat that ended in tragedy.
Officers threw a flash grenade through the front window before rushing into the flat on Lillibridge Street about 12:40 a.m. Details of what happened next have varied.
According to the police, when Officer Joseph Weekley entered the front room, he had some form of physical contact with 46-year-old Mertilla Jones. The officer's gun went off, piercing the neck of 7-year-old Aiyana Stanley-Jones, who was sleeping on the living-room couch. She was dead on arrival at St. John Hospital.
Aiyana's family has refuted the police version, saying Mertilla Jones made no contact with Weekley, and that after the shooting, officers took her into custody and held her for 12 hours, testing her hands to see if there was any gunpowder on them, before releasing her.
Bing said he has seen the film footage of the incident, but that it showed nothing conclusive."

Its sensors can tell where and from what angle a shot was fired, nthe umber of weapons used, their calibre and even if a gunman was moving at speed.
The Safer Birmingham Partnership, which is behind the move, known as Project Safe and Sound, said it hoped the technology would help to continue the city’s gang-busting success."

FOXNews.com - Mexico's Calderon Knows Nothing About America's Gun Laws

FOXNews.com - Mexico's Calderon Knows Nothing About America's Gun Laws: "Calderon claimed that these were 'powerful weapons.' It is a common misunderstanding as the 'assault weapons' ban conjures up images of machine guns used by militaries. Yet the 1994 federal assault weapons ban had nothing to do with machine guns, only semiautomatics, which fire one bullet per pull of the trigger. The AK-47s banned by the assaults weapons ban were civilian, semiautomatic versions of the gun. The banned guns fired the same type of bullets, with the same rapidity, and doing the same damage as deer hunting rifles. Their inside guts are essentially the same as deer hunting rifles -- some people just like to own these 'military-style' weapons because of the way they look on the outside. The firing mechanisms in semiautomatics and machine guns are completely different. The entire firing mechanism of a semi-automatic gun has to be gutted and replaced to turn it into a military AK-47."

Slain rapper's lyrics used in shooter's defense in murder trial - latimes.com

Slain rapper's lyrics used in shooter's defense in murder trial - latimes.com: "'You be running when I shoot, I be shooting where you running,' he sang in his debut single released in 2008.

A year later, the rapper, whose real name is Roderick Burton, was shot as he allegedly ran from a gunman inside the Beverly Center's parking garage. He was struck four times, three in the back.

With the murder trial of his admitted shooter wrapping up this week, the work of the 21-year-old musician is center stage as jurors wrestle with two conflicting portraits of Burton: thug or entertainer.

» Don't miss a thing. Get breaking news alerts delivered to your inbox.

The defense attorney has drawn, in part, on the rapper's lyrics and Internet videos with alleged gang members to portray Burton as a violent gang member who was attacking his client. But prosecutors argue that Burton's gang ties are irrelevant and that his music was simply entertainment in a culture in which violence sells."

Delafield Gun Club Denies Neighbor Claims of Shootings - News Talk 97.5FM and 1360AM

Delafield Gun Club Denies Neighbor Claims of Shootings - News Talk 97.5FM and 1360AM: "shooting range in Delafield, where a stray bullet was shot that grazed a diner last month, denies claims by neighbors that there were 5 such incidents. Wayne Dehn says they’ve occurred since 2000, and he says they back up the neighbors’ contention that the Hartland Sportsman’s Club should be shut down.
But a club attorney calls the previous shootings “unsubstantiated.” 3 of them involved a nearby chemical plant where range opponents said employees once had bullets fly just over their heads. Last week, Delafield Police said a berm that was supposed to get from flying beyond the shooting range was not sufficient. The club said it previously expanded its berms, and raised their heights, to keep both the bullets and the noise under control."

Gang, gun plague echoed in Cayman

Gang, gun plague echoed in Cayman: "After a four-year-old is shot in the head, island’s police warn BDA — speak out to stop a similar tragedy happening to you
The dramatic rise in gang and gun crime that has plagued Bermuda over the past six months is being mirrored in the Cayman Islands.

There have been five gun murders there so far this year, including the killing of four-year-old Jeremiah Barnes, who was shot in the head as he sat in the back of his mother's car in February.

The murder of an innocent child has been hailed in Cayman as a watershed moment that finally convinced a reluctant community to talk to the police, resulting in a string of charges over this year's murders."

POST BAG Enough is enough

POST BAG Enough is enough: "Saturday night's shootings and the death of two police officers is additional proof of the fact that the UDD is nothing more than a street gang. Drive-by shootings are tactics used by drug gangs in the United States and now it seems that the UDD has borrowed a page from that playbook. They even wear street colours (red shirts) like their role models in America.
Saturday night's incidents are also evidence that the so-called ''leaders'' of the red shirts have lost control over the more radical and criminal elements of their membership. If they were moral men they would end their protest before this lack of control results in the loss of more innocent lives. However, they continue to demonstrate that they are content to be members of a sycophantic entourage for an absent man, who is also as morally bankrupt as they are."

Britain's ruthless child gangsters trained to mutilate at seven

Britain's ruthless child gangsters trained to mutilate at seven: "'A gun is easier to get than a mobile phone,' Regan quoted a community worker in Birmingham as having told him.

Regan quotes the chairman of a police advisory body as saying, 'We'd have had a lot more deaths on our streets if it wasn't for the fact that the youngsters firing the guns are such poor shots.'

While shootings remain comparatively rare, police report a 500 percent increase in youngsters taking some form of weapon to school. Some children also wear bullet-proof vests under their school uniform for fear of retaliatory attacks.

The children are methodically taught to stab their target repeatedly in the backside so that he/she would be scarred for life and need a colostomy bag. They are also taught to aim at the arms to cause distress that is not fatal.

Bizarre gang initiation rituals include raping someone before being deemed fit to join."

Post Now - Cops: Neighbor feud led to Md. shooting: "double shooting in broad daylight in a quiet Brandywine neighborhood on Sunday afternoon stemmed from a neighborhood dispute and left one man dead and his teenage son wounded, Prince George's County police said. It was one of a spate of shootings that left three dead and nine wounded during a 24 hour period.
The name of the victims were not released. Officer Evan Baxter said a neighbor who apparently had a longstanding disagreement with the dead man was taken into custody after the shooting and was being questioned.
Residents of the 8800 block of Charm Court told news reporters that they were aware of the dispute between the men, but never suspected it would lead to violence. One neighbor told WRC-TV Channel 4 that the shooting was deeply shocking for a suburban community that in the past has experienced little crime other than occasional graffiti.
Baxter said the shooting was reported about 3 p.m. The teenager's wounds are not considered life-threatening, he said."
