Twenty-four hours after being arrested for allegedly holding a handgun to his fiancee’s head, Willie Andrews received his walking papers from the Patriots
The Pats yesterday released the defensive back, who was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and unlawful possession of a high-capacity firearm on Monday. The arrest marked the second for Andrews since the Super Bowl in February. Two days after the loss to the Giants, Andrews was busted in Lowell with a half-pound of marijuana and $6,800 in cash in his car. He was charged with possession of marijuana and intent to distribute. That case was continued without a finding. The 24-year-old was selected by the Patriots in the seventh round of the 2006 NFL draft. In two seasons, he totaled one defensive tackle, 23 special teams tackles and returned four kickoffs for 149 years. Against Miami last season, he returned a kickoff 77 yards for a touchdown.During his arraignment Monday, Andrews was ordered held without bail, pending a dangerousness hearing tomorrow morning in Attleboro District Court. The incident allegedly took place in Andrews’ Mansfield apartment.
“The victim stated that during an argument, the suspect held a handgun in his hand and was waving it,” Mansfield police said in a statement. “At some point during the argument, the handgun went up to the area of her temple.”Vincent Taylor, who represents Andrews, issued a “no comment,” when reached yesterday and asked about his client’s release.During minicamp in May, Andrews answered questions about his drug arrest, and acknowledged his mistake.“It was a situation I shouldn’t have been in in the first place, but we all make mistakes and you learn from those,” Andrews said. “I just hated that it had to be that type of situation to learn from, but that’s the hand I was dealt, so you’ve got to play the cards.”Following Andrews’ arrest Monday, the Pats issued a statement through club spokesman Stacey James.
“The New England Patriots [team stats] take the conduct of our players very seriously. We are aware of the very disturbing and alarming reports regarding Willie Andrews. We will not offer any additional comment, as is our policy regarding pending legal matters.”
