Wesley Golden, 17, has been charged with a felony for having the weapon on school premises.
According to documents filed in the Circuit Court of Adair County, Associate Division, school officials notified Kirksville Police they had reason to believe Golden had brass knuckles, a knife, and loaded handguns in his vehicle.
Superintendent Pat Williams said a staff member reported hearing rumors that Golden might have a gun in his vehicle. Williams added no threats were ever made regarding possible use of the gun.
When Golden gave consent for his vehicle to be searched, police and school officials found a knife/brass knuckles and a Walther P22 pistol. The gun was loaded and in a holster along with an extra loaded magazine.
Williams said Golden explained he had the gun because he is an avid target shooter.
Golden was taken into custody and is expected to be arraigned Friday and scheduled for an appearance in Associate Court Wednesday.
He is currently in custody at the Adair County Detention Center on a $10,000 cash-only bond.
