Authorities took into custody a man suspected of carrying a gun onto Middle Georgia College's main campus today.College officials said the man was not a student at the school in Cochran, located about 120 miles south of Atlanta. The man was not identified.Earlier this morning, the college was placed under a lockdown after a student reported seeing a man with a gun. Authorities conducted a room-by-room search of the college.College president Mary Ellen Wilson says the college has resumed normal operations and the lockdown was lifted around noon.The Bleckley County Sheriff's Office says there were no reports of shots fired.Georgia law prohibits carrying guns on college campuses.

Kevin Jonesarrested in connection with a drive-by shooting this weekend

A man has been arrested in connection with a drive-by shooting this weekend.No one was hurt in that shooting.It took place Sunday in the 1100 block of Potomac Street.
Police are trying to determine if Kevin Jones, 29, is also involved in another shooting on Clyde Street on Sunday where a teenager was injured.They said Jones is a gang member.

Illegal carrying of firearms on city streets Fort Myers Police Department made 99 arrests

In an effort to curtail the illegal carrying of firearms on city streets, the City of Fort Myers Police Department made 99 arrests in February.The effort is called Operation Safe Neighborhood. Undercover officers and officers from the department's vice and patrol units worked in the operation, officials report.
"The goal is to identify and arrest people that commit violent crimes and to arrest individuals who illegally possess firearms," police officials said in a release sent to the media today.Numbers cited by the police department: 617 traffic stops; 272 traffic citations; 99 arrests; 94 felony charges; and 64 guns confiscated.

“The unit is enhanced by intelligence information from concerned citizens and informants. Tipsters can remain anonymous. Every illegal gun taken off our streets is one less gun that can be used against an innocent citizen, gun down an officer or carelessly end up in the hands of a child,” said Major Doug Baker.Since January 1, the task force has removed 64 guns from city streets. The operation is still under way.

Murder of Andrei Kozlov

The Russian businessman accused of ordering the murder of Andrei Kozlov, a top central banker who was shot dead in 2006, pleaded not guilty on Monday.Alexei Frenkel, the former head of a small Russian bank, is accused of hiring cab drivers to murder Kozlov, who led a clampdown on money-laundering and revoked the licenses of dozens of banks, including Frenkel's."This is slander. The prosecution does not have the right to pour these slops on me in public. I am not guilty and have nothing to do with this crime," Frenkel told the court.Kozlov, 41, was gunned down in September 2006 after he left an amateur soccer match of bankers at a stadium in Moscow.The murder of Kozlov, one of the highest profile killings of President Vladimir Putin's presidency, brought back memories of the turbulent 1990s when contract killings were common.Months before his murder, Kozlov had revoked the license of VIP-Bank, where Frenkel was chief executive."Discontent is not a motive for killing someone from the top ranks of the Central Bank," said Frenkel's lawyer, Viktor Parshutkin, upon delivering the not-guilty plea.Prosecutor Gulchekhra Ibragimova said two gunmen who carried out the murder each received $8,500 from Frenkel, while their driver was paid $3,000. All three men were cab drivers from Ukraine.Liana Askerova, a former boxing promoter and restaurateur charged with helping Frenkel organise the murder, took $80,000 for her services, Ibragimova said.

WANTED James J. Walker

Police are looking for a Somerville man in connection with a bank robbery last week in East Somerville.On Thursday, Feb. 28, shortly before noon, the Sovereign Bank at 125 Broadway in East Somerville was robbed. The lone suspect entered the bank and presented a note demanding cash and stating that he had a gun. Police said no gun was shown. The suspect then fled the bank on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. Somerville Police detectives, working with the FBI Bank Robbery Task force, say that suspect is James J. Walker, 27. With the cooperation of citizens, police said they developed information pointing towards Walker as the bank robber.
A warrant has been issued for his arrest. He is described as a white male, five feet nine inches tall, about 190 pounds and has thinning hair. Walker allegedly robbed the Sovereign Bank last Thursday and then took a cab to the Haymarket Square section of Boston where he was dropped off. He is believed to still be in the Greater Boston area and may be accompanied by a female friend. He could be staying in a hotel or may be with friends who are unaware that he is wanted by police.

7 people have been shot inside a Wendy's Restaurant at 1366 Military Trail in West Palm

WPTV in West Palm Beach, Florida and MSNBC are reporting that 7 people have been shot inside a Wendy's Restaurant at 1366 Military Trail in West Palm. MSNBC has aired footage of victims being removed from the scene, and the cable news network has reported at least 2 fatalities. WPTV reports that 3 victims are in critical condition. One of the fatalities was said to be the gunman.Local authorities told NBC News that the shooter walked and started firing at random. The shooter walked in and went to the restroom. He then came back out, turned his back to the counter, and began firing. The killer committed suicide when he was done. On its website, WPTV described the shooter as a "well dressed black male in his thirties."A late afternoon press conference revealed that a lieutentant with the West Palm Fire Dept was killed during the rampage. The still-unnamed Lt. had returned to the restaurant briefly to retrieve a toy for his child when the gunman opened fire. A gunman wearing a jacket and tie wordlessly and randomly opened fire inside a Wendy's during the lunchtime rush Monday, killing a firefighter who'd gone back to fetch his child's toy and wounding five other diners. He then turned the gun on himself.
"This was not a robbery. He didn't demand anything...," said Paul Miller, a Palm Beach County sheriff's spokesman. "Looks like this was just another random shooting like we've seen around the United States."The 42-year-old victim, a Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue lieutenant, had met his wife and child at the restaurant, Deputy Fire-Rescue Chief Steve Delai said. The family had just left, but the man returned to retrieve a toy his child had left behind and was shot in the back as he stood at the counter, Delai said."Our officer probably didn't even see him," Delai said, adding that the man's wife and child were still in the parking when the shooting broke out.Three of the survivors were in critical condition, sheriff's spokeswoman Teri Barbera said. Two others had minor injuries, including one person who was injured while running away."I just saw a lady with a little boy in her arms come running out screaming, 'Somebody's shooting!"' said Sandra Jackson, who had been getting gas across the street. The woman said her husband was still inside, said Jackson, 43, of Palm Springs.The mayhem unfolded just after noon during the lunch hour rush at the eatery on a major suburban road lined with strip malls, car dealerships and fast food restaurants, about five miles from downtown West Palm Beach. I thought this can't be happening," she said. "You see your life flash before your eyes."
Josh Maynard, 30, said he and his 20-year-old brother Jerry hit the floor when the well-dressed gunman opened fire. Jerry Maynard said the shooter held his gun sideways and said nothing.The gunman went to the counter, Miller said, shooting a customer before slowly turning to his left and firing on others before shooting himself.One customer kicked the pistol away from the gunman after he'd shot himself, then started first aid on the wounded, authorities said.When the shooting stopped, the Maynard brothers ran out of the restaurant. Josh Maynard's blue jeans were torn and his brown leather boots were sliced, damage he said was caused by a bullet that grazed him."It felt like somebody kicked me in the foot," he said.Bob Bertini, a Wendy's Inc. spokesman based in Dublin, Ohio, called the shooting "a senseless tragedy."In May of 2000 four employees were shot dead and three others were hurt at a robbery inside a Wendy's in Queens, N.Y.Known as the Wendy's Massacre of 2000, the shootings were done by 36-year-old ex-employee John Taylor, who was sentenced to death and accomplice Craig Godineaux, who was sentenced to life in prison.

Scots-born hospital anaesthetist Dr Thomas Shanks shot nurse Vickie Fletcher 10 times in the back after she dumped him for another man.A judge yesterday ordered Shanks to serve at least 18 years of a life sentence. But because he was originally jailed in 2000 and had already served two years while awaiting trial, he will be able to apply for parole in April 2016.The judge, Mrs Justice Cox, said Shanks would have got more than 30 years if he had been sentenced today.But she was bound by the more lenient sentencing guidelines in force at the time he was convicted.Shanks was in court yesterday because of a law change which forces judges to set minimum terms for lifers.Mrs Justice Cox said he had been convicted on overwhelming evidence of premeditated murder.She said the worst feature of the case was that Shanks shot Vickie, 21, as she was walking away from him. She was still staggering from the first burst of gunfire when he fired a second at closer range.Shanks murdered Vickie on May 7, 1998 outside a pub in Castleford, Yorkshire.He had dated the nurse for three years while they worked together at nearby Pontefract General Infirmary, but Vickie left him for a former patient.Crazed with jealousy, Shanks tracked Vickie and her new man to the pub and confronted them. He then went home for the Kalashnikov, a trophy from his service in the Gulf War, and returned to the scene.Shanks also had an axe, a sheath knife and a baseball bat in his car.He confronted Vickie again outside the pub and shot her down.After the killing, Shanks drove to Glasgow. He was arrested in a phone box in nearby Lennoxtown and two Strathclyde traffic cops were given bravery awards for catching him.Shanks told his trial he was not responsible for his actions when he shot Vickie and claimed his mind had been affected by Gulf war syndrome. But the trial judge said his defence was "spurious".At the Royal Courts of Justice in London yesterday, Mrs Justice Cox rejected claims by the killer's lawyers that his sentence should be cut because of his "mental disorder".
She noted that Shanks had lost his temper and "manhandled" nurses at work several times before the murder. He had been given a final warning from the hospital over the incidents.The judge said Shanks's good behaviour in jail painted "an encouraging picture". But she said his conduct was nowhere near exceptional enough to justify a sentence lower than 18 years.
