Drug busts and gun crime spiral - Bermuda Sun... Beyond the Headlines - Hamilton, Bermuda: "Gun crime and drugs seizures reached record heights in 2010, according to the latest police statistics.
Last year seven men were shot dead and a further 29 were injured as a result of gunfire.
Detectives dealt with a total of 70 confirmed firearm incidents, which was nearly double the previous year’s figure.
In the last three months of 2010, officers seized $21.4 million worth of drugs – which included a 318kg cannabis haul on board a vessel heading for Bermuda.
For the year, a record total of $29.5 million worth of drugs was seized across the island.
Today Police Commissioner Michael DeSilva told a press conference that crime overall had decreased by more than 14 per cent in 2010 compared to 2009.
And he said there had been 193 fewer offences in the fourth quarter of 2010 compared to the third quarter of the same year.
Mr. DeSilva added: “There were 4,575 offences for the whole of 2010, making 2010 the lowest yearly figure from comparative records available.”"
